Financial Assistance

Who is eligible for financial assistance?
A person who passes away in Lancaster County Nebraska can have their cremation paid for by the county if they are destitute.  They are eligible for financial assistance if they had NO ASSESTS (no pension, no car, no insurance or money).  The county considers only the deceased assets including a spouse but not his/her families’ assets. The county only provides for cremation, not burial.

What if our loved one has only a car or a small bank account?
The Lancaster County office will work with your family determining the value of the assets of your loved one.  They can take the assets and deduct it from the amount the county will pay.  Your family will owe that amount to the funeral home on the day of making arrangements.  Aspen does not extend credit.

Who do we call in Lancaster County?
If you intend to use the County for assistance, upon death of your loved one you need to go to their office and apply for assistance.  They are located at 3140 N Street, Suite 2106 in Lincoln.  Generally, this cannot be done until death.  They are open 9 - 12 and 1 - 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. They will ask you to fill out forms and in most cases tell you immediately if your loved one qualifies.  You will be asked to provide a copy of the last three month's bank statement. Click here to go to the General Assistance website to download the application.  Click on the left side of the page GA Cremation Application:  www.lancaster.ne.gov/ga

Which funeral home do we call?
Any funeral home in Lincoln accepts County assistance.  You are free to go to any funeral home.  All funeral homes in Lincoln work with county cases.  But remember, if your loved one ends up not qualifying for assistance Aspen does not extend credit.  You will be asked for pay when we meet with you.  We do not except life insurance either.

If your loved one qualifies, the county will fax the funeral home the acceptance.  Your family is free to call us and make an appointment to meet with our funeral director.  To assure availability of our director and to give you the personal attention and time needed to make the arrangements, please call to schedule a convenient time. The majority of arrangements are conducted during normal business hours.  Most families are able to come to the funeral home right after making arrangements with the county.
